Introduction to SICA

What Is SICA?

Signalling Infrastructure Condition Assessments (SICA) are a process used by Network Rail to evaluate the condition of its signaling assets. The SICA process is used to determine when assets need to be renewed.

How Does SICA work?

  • A set of questions are used to assess the physical condition, environment, reliability, and maintainability of an asset
  • Samples are taken from multiple assets within an interlocking area
  • A condition score is determined for each asset type
  • The condition score is used to estimate when the asset will need to be renewed

SICA Survey Types

  • Primary surveys are less detailed and are performed earlier in the asset's life
  • Secondary surveys are more detailed and are performed on assets that are in the poorest condition

SICA Process Use

  • The results of SICA surveys are used to help develop a renewals work bank
  • The SICA process is Network Rail's primary tool for assessing the condition of its signalling assets
