Introduction to SICA
What Is SICA?
Signalling Infrastructure Condition Assessments (SICA) are a process used by Network Rail to evaluate the condition of its signaling assets. The SICA process is used to determine when assets need to be renewed.
How Does SICA work?
- A set of questions are used to assess the physical condition, environment, reliability, and maintainability of an asset
- Samples are taken from multiple assets within an interlocking area
- A condition score is determined for each asset type
- The condition score is used to estimate when the asset will need to be renewed
SICA Survey Types
- Primary surveys are less detailed and are performed earlier in the asset's life
- Secondary surveys are more detailed and are performed on assets that are in the poorest condition
SICA Process Use
- The results of SICA surveys are used to help develop a renewals work bank
- The SICA process is Network Rail's primary tool for assessing the condition of its signalling assets
